Board of Architectural Review

Minutes of the regular meeting of March 12, 2008. Mr. Kriner called the meeting to order.

Members present: Sandra Husman, Patrick Kriner, Mayor Craig Stough, Mary Westphal (4) present.

Ms. Husman moved, Ms. Westphal seconded to approve the Minutes of the February 13, 2008, meeting as submitted. Vote being: Husman, Stough, Kriner, Westphal (4) aye; (0) nay. Motion passed by a 4 to 0 vote.

Item 3 - Regulated Sign - app. no 4-2008 requested by Humphrey Sign Co., Inc. for Edward Jones, 6600 Sylvania Avenue, Sylvania. Mr. Donald Fritz present. The sign is a standard Edward Jones sign that they use all over the country. They are proposing channel neon letters on a raceway. The new owner of the property is trying to upgrade the signs at Saxon Square and the channel letters will be the new standard. There will also be a decal, on the interior of the glass door, which states the name and telephone number. Ms. Husman moved, Ms. Westphal seconded to give a Certificate of Appropriateness for the Edward Jones signs, 6600 Sylvania Avenue, as depicted in the drawing submitted with app. no. 4-2008. Vote being: Stough, Kriner, Westphal, Husman (4) aye; (0) nay. Motion passed by a 4 to 0 vote.

Item 4 - Regulated Sign - app. no 5-2008 requested by B & B Sign for Uniform Mart, 5834 Monroe Street, Sylvania. Ms. Betty Holman present. The Uniform Shop is a new business to this location, they have a store near St. Charles Hospital and this will be their second shop. They are proposing channel letters on a raceway, and the sign is smaller than maximum allowed. Mr. Kriner commented that he likes the light-blue sign faces. Ms. Husman moved, Ms. Westphal seconded to give a Certificate of Appropriateness for app. no 5-2008 for Uniform Mart, 5834 Monroe Street, as shown on the drawing submitted. Vote being: Kriner, Westphal, Husman, Stough (4) aye; (0) nay. Motion passed by a 4 to 0 vote.

Item 5 - Request to Amend Regulated Sign - app. no. 50-2007 requested by Hasam Muhsen, for Masjid Saad Foundation to allow the temporary sign to remain until June 1, 2008 at 5225 Alexis Road, Sylvania. This is the sign that was installed without approval, they then came before the board and the board decided to allow them to use the sign as a temporary sign. They were asked to come back to the board with their plan for a permanent monument sign for that location. Mr. Oberly reported that they are having discussion on their foundation board but have not made a decision. They originally asked to extend the time for the temporary sign until April 25, but Mr. Oberly felt that would not give them adequate time to reach a decision so he suggested that the temporary sign be extended until June 1, 2008. Ms. Husman moved, Ms. Westphal seconded to amend app. no. 50-2007 for Masjid Saad Foundation to allow the temporary sign to remain until June 1, 2008 at 5225 Alexis Road, Sylvania, with the understanding that they will submit their request for a permanent monument sign. Vote being: Westphal, Husman, Stough, Kriner (4) aye; (0) nay. Motion passed by a 4 to 0 vote.

Ms. Husman moved, Ms. Westphal seconded to adjourn the meeting. All present voted aye. Meeting adjourned.
