Board of Architectural Review

 

Minutes of the regular meeting of July 16, 2008.  Mr. Kriner called the meeting to order.

 

Members present: Sandra Husman, Patrick Kriner, Mary Westphal (3) present.   Mayor Craig Stough (1) excused.  Mr. Robert Oberly present.

 

Ms. Husman moved, Ms. Westphal seconded to approve the Minutes of the June 11, 2008, meeting as submitted.  Vote being: Westphal, Husman, Kriner (3) aye; (0) nay. Motion passed by a 3 to 0 vote.

 

Item 3 - Regulated Sign - app. no. 19-2008 requested by Jennifer Harlett for Wild Hair, 5161 S. Main Street, Sylvania.  Ms. Jennifer Harlett present.  She is requesting a face plate change for the pre-existing sign cabinet.  It will be exact same size, and the background will be purple with white lettering, as shown on the sample.  Ms. Husman asked if there are plans to update the shopping center.  Mr. Oberly stated that we have not heard of any plans to redo Southbriar and with multiple ownership it is hard to come to a consensus.  Ms. Husman moved, Ms. Westphal seconded to give a Certificate of Appropriateness for the new sign face for app. no. 19-2008 for Wild Hair at 5161 S. Main Street.  Vote being:  Kriner, Husman, Westphal (3) aye; (0) nay. Motion passed by a 3 to 0 vote.

 

Item 4 - Regulated Sign - app. no. 20-2008 requested by Toledo Sign for Hospice Residence, 5340 Harroun Road, Sylvania.  Ms. Myra Gueli present.  Hospice wants to install one-quarter inch thick painted aluminum letters on the wall.  The sign will not be visible from Harroun Road, and this is an identification sign for the Ebeid Hospice Residence.  Mr. Kriner explained that this is similar to the identification signs that were approve for Kingston.  Ms. Husman moved, Ms. Westphal seconded to give a Certificate of Appropriateness for the Ebeid Hospice Residence at 5340 Harroun Road as shown on the drawing submitted with app. no. 20-2008.  Vote being: Husman, Westphal, Kriner (3) aye; (0) nay. Motion passed by a 3 to 0 vote.

 

Item 5 - Regulated Sign - app. no. 21-2008 requested by National Illumination for Subway, 7621 Sylvania Avenue, Sylvania.  Mr. Neil Jeakle present.  They are replacing the Subway sign with the new logo type for Subway.  There is a subtle difference in the type style between the two signs.  The new sign will be smaller than the existing sign and is less square footage than allowed.  Ms. Husman moved, Ms. Westphal seconded to give a Certificate of Appropriateness for app. no. 21-2008 for the new Subway sign at 7621 Sylvania Avenue as shown on the drawing presented at the meeting.  Vote being: Westphal, Kriner, Husman (3) aye; (0) nay. Motion passed by a 3 to 0 vote.

 

Item 6 - Regulated Sign - app. no. 22-2008 requested by Madison Cove Association for Madison Cove, Madison Cove Court at Main Street, Sylvania.  Mr. John Hoover and Mr. Pete Genot present.  They want to replace the wooden Madison Cove sign out at the street.  The proposed sign will have brick pillars, using the same color brick as the buildings, with a sandstone cap on each pillar, the sandstone sign face will be engraved with five inch high letters to read Madison Cove, and there will be decorative wrought iron above the sign face.  The letters may be painted black if they are not visible.  The intent is to make the sign more visible for visitors.  Next year they may want to add                                                                        Board of Architectural Review

Item 6 - continued:

lights to the sign, probably illuminated the sign from the ground.  Ms. Husman moved, Ms. Westphal seconded to give a Certificate of Appropriateness for the new Madison Cove sign to be placed in the same location as the existing sign, with the brick pillars to match the brick on the buildings, the engraved sand stone sign faces with the decorative wrought iron, as shown on the drawing submitted with app. no. 22-2008.  Vote being: Kriner, Westphal, Husman (3) aye; (0) nay. Motion passed by a 3 to 0 vote.

 

Ms. Husman moved, Ms. Westphal seconded to adjourn the meeting.  All present voted aye.  Meeting adjourned.
