Board of Architectural Review

Minutes of the regular meeting of September 10, 2008.  Mr. Kriner called the meeting to order.

Members present:  Read Backus, Sandra Husman, Patrick Kriner, Christopher Pitman, Mayor Craig Stough, (5) present.  Mr. Robert Oberly present.

Mayor Stough welcomed Dr. Backus and Mr. Pitman to the Planning Commission.

Ms. Husman moved, Mayor Stough seconded to approve the Minutes of the August 13, 2008, meeting as submitted.  Vote being: Stough, Kriner, Husman (3) aye; (0) nay; Pitman, Backus (2) abstain.  Motion passed by a 3 to 0 to 2 vote.

Item 3 - Regulated Sign - app. no. 27-2008 requested by John S. Demitry for Amazing Space 6820 Sylvania Avenue, Sylvania.  The e-mail from Dave Parrish was sent to the members.  They are requesting additional time to revise their drawing.  Mr. Oberly discussed the sign with Mr. Parrish and they do not have enough room in front of the building for a ground mount sign.  They are considering a wall mount sign and probably a projecting sign that would go above the awning, where there is an electrical outlet.  The awnings extend three feet from the building.

Item 4 - Regulated Sign - app. no. 28-2008 requested by Classic Sign Company for Great Clips, 7620 Sylvania Avenue, Sylvania.  Mr. Pat Gaswint present.  The sign will be a wall mounted, it is located in the plaza by The Anderson=s Market.  Ms. Husman said that it is a classic looking sign.  The sign will be internally illuminated with white faces with black trim cap and returns, and the raceway will be painted to match the facade of the building.  Mayor Stough remarked that this is the only sign they will get.  Ms. Husman moved, Mr. Pitman seconded to give a Certificate of Appropriateness for the new sign for Great Clip, 7620 Sylvania Avenue, as represented in app. no. 28-2008.  Vote being:  Kriner, Pitman, Backus, Husman, Stough (5) aye; (0) nay.  Motion passed by a 5 to 0 vote.

Mr. Oberly mentioned that there are a couple sign issues he would like to look at.  First is the forty square feet allowed for a projecting sign, which would permit a sign to extend eight feet out from the building, he would suggest that twenty square feet would be a more reasonable size for projecting signs.  He also anticipates problems with trying to enforce window signs, it is hard to tell Mr. Sautter that he cannot have the window signs to advertise specials or Fricker=s that they cannot have their temporary banners.  He announced that the pole sign at the former Dalton Direct Carpet location will be coming down within the next thirty days.

Ms. Husman moved, Mr. Pitman seconded to adjourn the meeting.  All present voted aye.  Meeting adjourned.
