Location.
The City of Sylvania is located in Northwest Ohio. It adjoins the City of Toledo along Toledo's western border. Sylvania is 225 miles east of Chicago, 60 miles south of Detroit, and 120 west of Cleveland.

Highways.
You may reach Sylvania from the north via U.S.23 or I75 to I475 to U.S.23, from the south via I75 to I475 to U.S.23, from the east via I80-I90 to I475 to U.S.23, and from the west via I80-I90 to I475 to U.S.23.

Population.
The population of the City of Sylvania is 18,670 and Sylvania Township is 25,583 according to the 2002 census figures.

 

History

Sylvania was founded in 1833 by Judge William Wilson and General David White. The heavily forested location prompted adoption of its name. In its early years Sylvania served the farms and general residential community with saw mills, tannery, barrel stave factory, grist mills, livery stables, and blacksmith shops. It was the center of rural life in this area. The first school was erected in 1834, and it served until 1844 when the Old Stone Academy was build. Sylvania was incorporated into a village in 1867, and reached city status on January 1, 1961.

 

Government Services

Administration of the City is by a Mayor/Council form of government. The township is governed by a three member Board of Trustees.

The City Police Department and the Township Police Force have full-time professional staffs.

The Fire Department, which serves both the City and the Township, maintains both a full-time and volunteer force utilizing 4 stations. The Fire Department is pleased to be one of the few departments in the area to provide Advanced Life Support on all first response apparatus from each station, everyday. Fire insurance ratings are Class 4 and 5 in the City, and Class 4, 5, and 9 in the Township.

Sylvania benefits from being a part of Lucas County's  Emergency Medical Service , with a response unit located at No. 1 Fire Station. The community is also part of a county-wide 911 emergency phone system

These rates are per $1,000.00 of assessed value (based on 35% of true value). In addition, there is a further 10% roll-back reduction. In some cases an additional 2 1/2% homestead reduction is applicable. The payroll tax for the City of Sylvania is 1 1/2%. Lucas County has a 1.25% sales tax in addition to the 6% sales tax levied by the State of Ohio.

 

Utilities

The City of Sylvania distributes water to customers within its boundaries. The Township is served by Lucas County. Electric power, telephone service, and natural gas are provided by Toledo Edison, Verizon, and Columbia Gas respectively.

 

Transportation

Highways. Sylvania is located on U.S. 23, a major north-south limited access highway. U.S. 23 is also designated I-475, and offers quick access to the Ohio Turnpike (I-80) and to I-75. Other major highways serving the City include U.S. 20, and State Routes 51 (formerly named U.S. 223) and 184.

Rail. The City is served by a line of the ConRail System. Truck. Sylvania is in the Toledo commercial zone for intra and interstate shipments. Over 100 truck lines serve the area.

Air. Toledo Express Airport is located 10 miles southwest of Sylvania. The airport handles all types of aircraft, is served by major airlines, and offers passenger, freight, and charter service. There are several facilities in the area for light aircraft, the nearest being Toledo Suburban Airport, about 5 miles northeast of Sylvania.

Bus. Sylvania, through participation in the Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority (TARTA), has local bus service to the Toledo metropolitan area.

 

Development

The Sylvania Area Chamber of Commerce and the Sylvania Area Community Improvement Corporation actively promote commercial and industrial development. They effectively work with companies considering a Sylvania location.

 

Commerce and Retail.

There are numerous facilities for professional and business offices, including excellent office parks and large tracts of land zoned for this type of development. The area has a complete line of retail outlets, and is located close to major shopping areas. All financial institutions and facilities are located in the Sylvania area.

 

Present Industry

Local industry represents manufacturing and services provided in the following categories: cement products, crusted limestone aggregate, tool manufacturing, concrete and plastic pipe, paving material, door and frame manufacturing, wood products, industrial casting, and agricultural produce.

 

General Information

Housing. Sylvania is regarded as one of the area's choice residential communities, with all types of housing, including country estates, condominiums, apartments, retirement facilities, and individual homes.

Schools. Sylvania has an excellent public school system consisting of seven elementary, three junior high, and two senior high schools. The system offers college preparatory and vocational education studies, and continuing adult education programs. 
The St. Francis Education Center  is a Catholic school.  Religion is included in the course of study from preschool through eighth grade.


College and Universities. Lourdes College is located in the City. Other colleges and universities within the metropolitan area include the University of Toledo, Owens Community College, and Bowling Green State University.

Religious Groups. All major religious groups are represented.

Medical. Comprehensive medical services are available in Sylvania itself through Flower Hospital and its related facilities. In the metropolitan area there are also several other major hospitals, including a teaching hospital at the Medical College of Ohio.

Media. A weekly newspaper, The Sylvania Herald, a monthly newspaper, The Sylvania Commercial Advantage, and a daily metro, The Toledo Blade, serve the community. Television is provided by several Toledo and Detroit stations, plus Buckeye Cablevision. Sylvania has a licensed FM radio station, and the region provides additional radio coverage.

Recreational & Cultural Facilities.

In the immediate area there are many public parks, numerous playing fields and tennis courts, two indoor ice arenas, four private tennis clubs, a natatorium and several outdoor swimming facilities. Two country clubs with 18 hole golf courses are located in the City. Sylvania's Highland Meadows Golf Club is home to the LPGA Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic Golf Tournament. 

Residents also have easy access to the nationally recognized Toledo Museum of Art, professional sports, Lake Erie boating and fishing, and the Toledo Zoo.  Sylvania is also home to the Franciscan Center of the Sisters of St. Francis, offering a regular schedule of live musical and theatrical performances.

The American Legion, Rotary, Exchange Club, Kiwanis, Business and Professional Women, Scouts, Jaycees, Chamber of Commerce, and fraternal, ethnic, and personal interest organizations are all active in Sylvania.
