Flower Hospital is a 279-bed medical facility and part of the regional ProMedica Health System.

History

Judge William Wilson and General David White founded Sylvania in 1833, just 30 years after Ohio became a state. It was named for the dense forests that covered the area (Sylvania still has the distinction of being a Tree City). Find out more.

Location

You will find the City of Sylvania in Northwest Ohio, just west of Toledo, right up against the Michigan border. Several major highways will bring you into Sylvania, including U.S. 23 and I-75 from the north and south, and I-80/90 (the Ohio Turnpike) from the east and west. Find out more.

Public Safety

The City of Sylvania Police Division is staffed by full-time, professional law enforcement officers under the leadership of the chief of police.

The Sylvania Township Fire Department provides fire and emergency medical response for the city and Sylvania Township from four strategically located stations. Crews include skilled emergency medical services personnel certified and equipped for advanced life support assistance. Lucas County emergency medical services also cover Sylvania residents and visitors, and Sylvania is included in the county’s 911 emergency phone system.

Air

Major air services are provided by Toledo Express Airport, 10 miles southwest of the City of Sylvania, which handles all types of aircraft, is served by major airlines and offers passenger, freight and charter services.

Bus

Sylvania is provided with daily mass transit services as a participating member of TARTA, the Toledo Regional Area Transit Authority. TARTA services include:

  • Daily express routes to and from Sylvania
  • Park-n-Ride shuttle services and scheduled routes serving metropolitan Toledo
  • Call-A-Ride door-to-door service
  • Toledo Area Regional Paratransit Service (TARPS) for riders with disabilities or special needs

Highway

Sylvania is located on U.S. 23, a major north-south limited access highway. A portion of U.S. 23 is also designated I-475, the major artery encircling much of Toledo, and offers quick access to I-75 and the Ohio Turnpike (I-80/90). Other major highways serving the Sylvania area include U.S. 20, St. Rt. 51 (formerly U.S. 223) and St. Rt. 184.

Rail

Up to 100,000 passengers pass through Toledo’s Amtrak station each year, making it Ohio’s busiest passenger rail hub. In addition, Northwest Ohio is one of the top five rail hubs in the U.S., served by four major rail lines and assorted short-line carriers.

Truck

Sylvania is in the Toledo commercial zone for intra- and interstate shipments. Our area is ideally situated at the “Crossroads of America,” where I-75 intersects with I-80/90, putting us within one day’s drive of most of the largest markets in the United States and Canada.
