School Programs
Educational programs allow school children a unique glimpse into the area's history. Sylvania Historical Village hosts three regular programs for elementary school classes, designed to aid educators in teaching social studies to students primarily in grades 2 - 5. Volunteers in period costume provide a day of activities. Children bring their own bag lunches.
Every program is customized for the grade level, teacher curriculum and school-specific day (start to dismissal). All programs integrate visits to the log home, one-room school and blacksmith and carpentry shop. Subject matter and hands-on activities are designed to synchronize with strands from the Ohio proficiency tests and State of Ohio grade-specific social studies standards.
Pioneer Program
This program focuses on the experiences and skills of early Ohio settlers and pioneer life in the Maumee Valley in the 1800s.
Colonial Program
Through hands-on activities and interaction with volunteers in period dress, students experience life as children knew it in colonial times. Typical "chores" and demonstrations include spinning, churning butter and how herbs were used as medicine.
Underground Railroad Program
Based on age, students learn about life during the pre-Civil War era and how the Underground Railroad operated. Volunteers use Village buildings and materials to show how local families aided runaway slaves through Sylvania and on to freedom in Canada.
Traveling Suitcase
A unique "Traveling Suitcase" is available for weekly rental. Intended for teachers, the suitcase includes original and reproduction items, activities and resource materials. To borrow the Traveling Suitcase, call 419-882-4865, or e-mail hist.village@sev.org or mcbaker1@bex.net.
Annual Sylvania Elementary Art Show (January - March)
Each year, for three months, the Sylvania Heritage Center Museum becomes an art gallery, displaying artwork created by children from Central, Hill View, Highland, Maplewood, Stranahan, Sylvan and Whiteford Elementary schools.
The exhibit displays a specific type of artwork completed by one class from each school. Every Wednesday for seven weeks, the Heritage Center Museum holds a reception for one school's student artists, their family and teachers.
