What is the Municipal Code?

The municipal code is actually a collection of codes - laws and regulations grouped together (or "codified") according to the activities they regulate (traffic, income taxes, fire prevention, etc.). This collection forms the city's overall legal code.

The municipal code is organized in outline form. Each individual code is literally a "part" (Part One - Administrative Code, Part Three - Traffic Code, etc.) of the overall code. Each code then narrows to "titles" (Title One - General Provisions, Title Three - Legislative), then "chapters" (as in Chapter 103 - Official Standards) and "sections."

At the beginning of each chapter, under the title, you'll find the sections listed by number with the topic of that section (like a table of contents). Be sure to check the cross-references just below. They'll tell you where to find other chapters and sections where your topic is mentioned.

Also, be sure to note any amendments to the laws in that chapter, such as the amendment to Chapter 171, the Income Tax code. Any amendments may have made significant changes in how the law affects you.

If You Know Where to Find What You Need

Go directly to the Codified Ordinances table of contents links further down on this page or in menu to the left. Click on the name of any Part, or individual code,to go to the page that offers you the option to 1) view the entire code in one document or 2) choose the chapter about your topic.

Advantage: The chapter titles include links to any amendments pertaining to that chapter. Checking this list is an easy way to see at a glance whether there are any amendments, so you can find them easily.

Hint: Click on Preliminaries, then General Index to see a very detailed index of all topics within the entire code and the sections in which they are found.

If You Have No Idea Where to Find What You Want

Use the Full Text Search to find any Sylvania ordinance you need. This is an easy document search tool into the contents of every City of Sylvania ordinance.

Just type in a key word or term you want it to find: for example, "petitions," "tree trimming" or "compensation." It will search every item in the code and provide a list items that include that term. (Be sure to spell your terms correctly; it is not an "intuitive" program like Google.)
