The Department of Law acts as the City's lawyers, and handles most of the City's legal needs. The Department includes the Director of Law and two Prosecutors.
The Director of Law is James E. Moan
The Chief Prosecutor is Robert A. Pyzik
The Assistant Prosecutor is Michelle A. Wagner
The Department of Law performs the following tasks.
- It drafts the resolutions and ordinances considered by City Council.
- It negotiates the terms and conditions of contracts entered into by the City, including lease agreements, real property purchase agreements, service agreements, and contracts to purchase goods.
- It works with the Director of Finance relative to appropriations for City expenditures.
- It works with the Director of Public Service with regard to Utilities matters.
- It assists the Mayor and Staff in economic development matters.
- It investigates, defends, and coordinates the insurance defense of claims asserted in lawsuits filed against the City.
- It prosecutes criminal charges and renders legal advice to various public safety agencies serving the Sylvania Municipal Court, including the Sylvania City Police, Sylvania Township Police, Holland Police, Lucas County Sheriff's Department, Ohio State Highway Patrol, Lucas County Dog Warden, Toledo Humane Society, Department of Liquor Control, Toledo Metroparks Police, Lucas County Health Department, the Sylvania Fire Department, Berkey Police, Harding Township Police, Ohio Department of Public Safety, Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation, Drug Enforcement Administration, Metro Drug Task Force, Sylvania City Zoning, Sylvania Township Zoning, Holland Zoning, Harding Township Zoning, Springfield Township Zoning, Spencer Township Zoning, Richfield Township Zoning, Sylvania Tax Department and Holland Tax Department.
