"2005 Street Improvements Planned"

During their regular meeting on Wednesday, January 19, 2005, Sylvania City Council authorized the Clerk to proceed with advertising for the first bid of the 2005 Street Improvement Program.  That bid is for pavement planing (or grinding) of some existing asphalt streets and is estimated at $40,000.

This year will be the third year of a planned six year street improvement program that began in 2003.  Neighborhood streets are being resurfaced or rebuilt with no assessments to the property owners.  These improvements to our neighborhood streets are to improve the appearance our neighborhoods, maintain our property values, and keep Sylvania the place people choose to buy homes and live.

Asphalt pavement planing and resurfacing projects are being paid for with capital improvement funds.  This year, improvements to all or a portion of Barkwood, Tamworth, Sheringham, Denbridge, Addington, Frejon, Brendon Way, Fairway, Vicksburg, Winsford, Silvertown, Brintwood and Summit are planned at an estimated cost of $760,000.  A private contractor will do the pavement planing, and all but Summit and Silvertown will be repaved by our Streets Division crews in early summer.  Summit and Silvertown will be repaved by a contractor.

Concrete street replacements are being funded with municipal bonds sold last year.  This year, improvements to all or a portion of Longfellow, Wedgewood, Brookline, Charlesgate (east), Coppersmith (east), Brinthaven, Brintwood, Sylvan, Sandlewood and New England are planned at an estimated cost of $2,108,000.  All this work will be bid to contractors for construction later this year.

Street improvements enhance the appearance of our neighborhoods, and helps to keep our neighborhoods desirable and our home values high.  No assessments are being made to property owners for these street improvements.  The City of Sylvania remains committed to improving the condition or our streets as a part of keeping Sylvania a great place to live.
