MAYOR'S MESSAGE

Craig A. Stough            9/30/05

"Honoring Sister Sheila Shea"

During their September 19, 2005 meeting, Sylvania City Council unanimously passed Resolution 20-2005 honoring the many contributions of Sister Sheila Shea to the quality of life in our Sylvania community.

As the first manager of the Franciscan Center, Sister Sheila, of the Sylvania Sisters of St. Francis, had the opportunity to enrich our lives by bringing the performing arts here to Sylvania.  Beyond that, she has contributed her time and energy to many Sylvania committees and commissions, including the Sylvania Centennial Terrace Commission, the Sylvania Sister Cities Commission and the Sylvania Community Improvement Corporation.

A few years ago, I asked Sister Sheila to help re-energize the Sylvania Arts Commission.  In her typical community minded spirit, she took on the challenge with the energy necessary to successfully broaden both the scope and community base of the new Sylvania Community Arts Commission.

After serving as Executive Director of the new Arts Commission for the past few years, she has decided to step down to pursue other projects and goals, although she has consented to stay on as Secretary of the Commission.  It is her recent retirement from the Executive Director position that prompted City Council's resolution at this time.

One of the privileges of being Mayor is the opportunity to meet and work with some of the most energetic, creative and community minded people in Sylvania.  It has been and continues to be a joy to work with Sister Sheila.  She is one of Sylvania's brightest points of light for the arts and community service.  Congratulations Sister Sheila!
