"Groundbreakings in Sylvania"

Recently there have  been two groundbreaking ceremonies in Sylvania for large new facilities and investments in our City.  I thought you might like to know more about them.

First, Lourdes College broke ground on October 4, 2006 for the first new classroom building on their campus in about 40 years.  This new construction is a major milestone for the College, as is the rise in their enrollment to 2035 students.

The new $6.5 million building will be an excellent addition to their campus, blending with the traditional mission style architecture while at the same time introducing more modern design principles and proportions.  The Lourdes College campus is one of the most beautiful and peaceful places in Sylvania.   Further, the building will be heated and cooled using ground water source heat pumps, making it one of the most energy efficient buildings in northwest Ohio.

In addition to the evening study students they have served for years, the College is attracting many traditional full-time students, now making up 75% of their new enrollment.   This large and modern new classroom building will undoubtedly attract even more students to pursue higher education at Lourdes College.

Sylvania is truly blessed to have this vibrant and growing institution of higher learning in our City, broadening our horizons and improving our quality of life.  Congratulations to the Sisters of St. Francis and to Lourdes College for their vision and success in serving the residents of Sylvania and the surrounding northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan communities.

The second groundbreaking I recently attended was October 6, 2006 for a new Andersons Market on the north side of Sylvania Avenue west of King Road.  This groundbreaking is significant because the facility is a prototype store that may eventually be duplicated in many other communities. On the advice of their marketing experts, the Andersons chose to build their first Market right here in Sylvania.

No tax incentives or abatements were sought or offered.  The Andersons just believe Sylvania is the best place to build their new concept store, and I couldn't agree more.  The Market will be 30,000 S.F. in size and will offer expanded offerings of the fresh food, meats, wines and groceries available in the existing general stores.  They hope to have the Market open next spring.  The center under construction will also have additional rental retail space adjacent to their store.  Best wishes to the Andersons and thank you for investing in Sylvania.
