"City Employee Dies in Automobile Accident"

The City of Sylvania has been and continues to be blessed with many loyal and hardworking employees, enabling the City to function efficiently with fewer employees today than we had 12 years ago.  Juanita Adams was one of those excellent employees, serving in the Income Tax Office for over 20 years.  The City was deeply saddened by her recent sudden death in a horrible automobile accident.  She will be missed by all who knew her.  A Memorial Service was held in City Council Chambers in her memory on Friday, March 23, 2007.  We will continue to keep Juanita and her family in our thoughts and prayers.

"2007 Residential Street Improvements"

During their Monday, March 19, 2007 meeting, Sylvania City Council authorized advertising and bidding for the 2007 Pavement Planing Program, marking the beginning of residential street improvements in Sylvania for 2007.

Residential street improvements have been made for the past ten years to maintain the appearance of our neighborhoods and help keep them desirable and property values high.  No assessments are made upon the homeowners for these street improvements.   The street improvements fall into two categories – asphalt street resurfacing and concrete street replacements.

Sylvania City Council has authorized the 2007 street planing, or milling, bids which are annually awarded to and completed by a private contractor utilizing an asphalt pavement milling machine.  Once the milling is completed by early June, City Street Division crews will install a new asphalt wearing course using the City's asphalt paving equipment.

The neighborhood asphalt streets to be milled and repaved this year are Harrow, Grainfield, Old Farm, Mitchell, Timothy, Wenonah, Deepwood, Wild Ivy, Hawthorn, Windmill, Anvil, Brown, Martha, Kevin, Millford, Apple Meadow, Frances, Bittersweet, Claude, Doyle, Dunhill, Hedingham, Little Road and Convent.  For the third year, the milling bid package also includes several Sylvania Township streets which are bid by the City in cooperation with the Township and which the Township pays for.

The concrete neighborhood streets to be replaced with new asphalt streets in the City this year are Franciscan, Kinsman and Clare.  They will be bid and all work completed by a private contractor.  These replacement streets will be paid for with notes issued by the City, and eventually rolled into a municipal bond issue.

These neighborhood street improvements are part of an overall road improvement program that will also improve main thoroughfares.   This year, Monroe Street will be repaved from US 23 east to the City limit in conjunction with the Ohio Department of Transportation.  The Main Street bridge over Ten Mile Creek will be rebuilt.  Also, existing traffic signals along Sylvania Avenue from Stonehenge west to Krogers will be interconnected for more efficient traffic flow.

As always, I ask for your patience as these projects are constructed.  The construction will create inconvenience, and we will work with all contractors to complete the projects efficiently.  Thank you for your patience this road construction season.
