MAYOR'S MESSAGE

"2008 Street
Improvements Planned"
The City of Sylvania
is planning its street improvement projects for 2008. The projects include improvements to both
main thoroughfares and to neighborhood streets.
The projects will be paid for with capital improvement funds. None of the projects will result in special
assessments to property owners.
The largest and most visible project will be the Ohio
Department of Transportation repair and repaving of Monroe Street from US 23 east to Talmadge Road. The project has already been bid and awarded
to the Shelly Company and is planned to start in April and be complete in July. The City of Sylvania's cost for its portion of the work
inside the City is $860,000 plus any additional curb or catch basin repair work
needed. Much of the work will be
accomplished at night.
Convent Boulevard will be milled and repaved, and catch
basins rebuilt. This project was delayed
from 2007 due to the Main Street
bridge reconstruction so Convent could serve as a detour route, and also due to
construction at Lourdes
College. The project is bidding in March and is
estimated to cost $266,894.
Several aging neighborhood concrete streets are planned for
replacement this year. The northerly section
of Woodland is
bidding in March and is estimated to cost $264,300. Glasgow,
Glenmore, Cameron, Claremont, Wythe, and Graham
are scheduled to bid soon, as is the Acres
Road replacement from Alexis Road north to Marshall.
Municipal bonds will be sold to finance these street replacements.
The City of Sylvania
will continue for the twelfth year its program to mill and repave asphalt
neighborhood streets and pay for the improvements out of current capital
funds. The program is intended to
maintain the appearance of our neighborhoods, keep them desirable and maintain
property values. The milling off of the
old asphalt is bidding in March, and is estimated at $58,300. Once the milling contractor is complete by
early June, the asphalt repaving will be done by City Streets Division crews
this summer using the City's asphalt paving equipment.
The neighborhood streets to be milled and repaved this
summer are Brinthaven (north of Brint), Appomatox, Antietam, Todd, Pines, Red
Pines, Green Spruce, White Pines, Green Pines, Bonniebrook, Westbourne,
Wyndham, Campden, Wadsworth, Brixton, Radcliffe, Fairhaven, Gilcrest and Club. For the fourth year, the milling bid package
also includes several Sylvania
Township streets bid by
the City in cooperation with the Township and to be paid for by the Township.
These City street
improvements are all being completed without special property assessments. They will, however, create inconvenience for
our residents during construction.
Please be patient as the work progresses. The City will work with all the contractors
to complete the projects efficiently.
Thank you for your patience this street construction season.
