"Sylvania Shred Day II"

The City of Sylvania will be hosting a "shred day" again this year on Saturday, April 19th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  Last year's initial Sylvania Shred Day was utilized by many residents to dispose of old personal documents, and the City has received requests to repeat the program again this year.

AccuShred LLC will again bring their document destruction equipment to the Sylvania Municipal Court parking lot at 6700 Monroe Street and offer on-site shredding of documents.  AccuShred is a certified information document destruction company.

Residents can bring up to 50 lbs. of personal documents in boxes or bags for free shredding, courtesy of AccuShred without cost to the City.  That is about two banker's boxes full of documents.  Additional documents beyond 50 lbs. will also be shredded, but at a cost of $3 per container.  Saturday, April 19th  was specifically selected to follow the April 15th tax filing deadline when residents may need to dispose of personal documents.

Shredding is a safe way to dispose of personal documents that contain identity and financial information such as account numbers, social security numbers, names and addresses.  Identity theft has become a bigger problem in recent years, and shredding is one way to reduce your exposure to it.  On Shred Day, residents can watch their documents being shredded on site.

Shredding also offers a practical way to recycle the paper rather than bury it in a landfill.  The City of Sylvania has been a regional leader with its curbside materials recycling and green yard waste recycling programs.  Offering personal document shredding and paper recycling is a natural extension to those programs reflecting our Sylvania community's concern for the natural environment.

Last year's initial Sylvania Shred Day was a success and I anticipate that many residents will take advantage of the program again this year.  Residents should enter the Sylvania Municipal Court parking lot from the Monroe Street side.  Volunteers will be on hand to offer directions and assistance, and help keep the program flowing smoothly.
