MAYOR'S MESSAGE
Craig A. Stough 5/15/2008
"SYLVANIA
CELEBRATES 175 YEARS"
The City of Sylvania is
celebrating the 175th anniversary of the Sylvania area being settled. The official deed for the area was issued by
President Andrew Jackson on June 8, 1833 to General David White and Judge
William Wilson.
The Village
of Sylvania was formed 35
years later in 1868 and is recorded by a founding document on display in the
Mayor's office. Sylvania became a City and approved a Charter
in 1961 following the 1960 census when the population was determined to have
exceeded 5,000. The current population
of the City is now estimated at 19,000 and the Sylvania Township
population is estimated at an additional 25,000.
An Anniversary Celebration is scheduled for 12:00 Noon on Saturday,
June 7, 2008 at the Sylvania
Historic Village
on North Main Street. Announcements will be made that day by the
Town Crier and the Mayor, and Resolutions are anticipated from the Ohio
Legislature.
A special anniversary play written by Betty Boswell
depicting our 175 year history will be presented by 20 elementary school
students. Eddie Boggs will also be
performing.
Birthday cupcakes, 175 with birthday candles, will be
available, as will a large birthday card for signature by the public. Citizens are encouraged to bring a photo or
memento no larger than an index card for inclusion in a time capsule to be
opened in 25 years on the 200th anniversary in 2033.
Further, a scavenger hunt and contest is being planned to
locate 175 pictures of significant features taken all around Sylvania.
