The City of Sylvania works to create an environment of mutual support and good will. That’s what families do. And just as families of all kinds provide the glue that creates communities, services of all kinds help sustain families and nurture growth.

Sylvania Area Family Services (SAFS)

Designed to help low-income and at-risk families in the Sylvania school district, SAFS provides emergency assistance; information and referral services; after-school youth programs and summer day camp for low-income and at-risk youth by referral; and a summer hot-lunch site for kids 18 and younger. Outstanding initiatives also include youth diversion, youth education and parent project programs.

Sylvania Community Action Team works to promote a healthy community and healthy youth through awareness, education and prevention of at-risk behaviors. SCAT also brings resources together to support positive youth, family and community development.

SCS offers before and afterschool care for children in grades 1-6, half-day kindergarten care and all-day care for children ages 4-5. Care is provided in the Sylvania elementary schools as well as the Burnham Building and Northview High School. Transportation is provided by Sylvania school buses. We also offer care during teacher in-service days and for late-start and snow days, and extensive programs (camps) for winter, spring and summer breaks.

Sylvania Senior Center

Each year, the Sylvania Senior Center serves over 2,500 people age 55 and older with programs and activities. These include health and fitness programs, educational classes and lectures, legal and income services, and a variety of social activities. The center houses a woodworking shop, window on wildlife, eight-station computer lab, multipurpose rooms, health clinic, pool table and card room, great room with exercise floor and a dining area with a patio.

The Sylvania Jewish Community Center/YMCA provides a spectrum of services and programs, all with the exceptional quality and consistent presence that are hallmarks of both community agencies.

In addition to being part of the area’s largest childcare provider, the Sylvania “J and Y” offers classes in the arts, babysitting, ballet, cheerleading, gymnastics, karate, swimming and more; core fitness programs for children and adults, water sports and fitness programs, team-based athletics and clinics; early childhood education; the Chance for Change program for youth, age 11-18; and a range of programs for personal, career and spiritual guidance.

The Fair Housing Center

This professional, non-profit, civil rights agency is dedicated to the elimination of housing discrimination and to the expansion of neighborhood choice for all persons. It strives to ensure equal opportunities and access to housing, neighborhoods, public accommodations, lending and insurance.
