Harroun Park Stream Restoration (Phase 2)

Harroun Park Stream Restoration (Phase 2)

In February 2022, the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) awarded a grant to the City of Sylvania to continue in-stream restoration work for Tenmile Creek and the Ottawa River within Harroun Park.  The $240,200 Phase 1 project was completed in May 2021 and restored a 280-foot linear segment near SOMO Flats upstream of the pedestrian bridge.  The City was awarded $216,200 in Ohio Lake Erie Commission grant funds towards completion of that project.  For a video of the completed project, click here.

The Phase 2 project will expand the Phase 1 improvements downstream from the pedestrian bridge and includes an additional 1,000 feet of restoration.  The total cost of the Phase 2 work is $884,669 and the City was awarded $600,000 in GLRI grant funds to help pay for the improvement.  The Phase 2 project is scheduled to start construction in November 2023 and will be fully completed in May 2024.

The Phase 2 project aims to improve streambank conditions to reduce the amount of sediments and attached nutrients entering the stream, which eventually flows to Lake Erie.  The scope of work includes installing soil geolifts to shorten the width of the stream, in-stream J-hook structures to redirect flow into the center of the channel, rock riffles for improved in-stream habitat for aquatic species, and live brush layering to stabilize the streambanks. This project, along with many others being implemented across the region, will help make progress towards water quality improvement efforts undertaken by the State of Ohio for local waterways and Lake Erie.
